If you’ve ever walked past a refill shop and wondered “How does that even work?” - you’re not alone.
One of the most common things we hear at Zilch is:
“I love the idea… I just don’t know where to start.”
So let’s take the pressure off. This post explains what a zero-waste shop is, how refill shopping actually works, and why it’s much easier (and more normal!) than it might look.
So, what is a zero-waste shop?
A zero-waste shop is designed to reduce packaging waste by letting you buy everyday products without single-use plastic.
Instead of pre-packaged items, products are stored in large dispensers or containers, and you:
* bring your own containers (or use one of ours)
* refill exactly the amount you need
* only pay for the product - not the packaging
At Zilch, that includes things like:
* dried food (pasta, rice, beans, pulses, nuts, seeds)
* frozen foods
* oils and sauces
* cleaning products
* laundry liquid
* hand wash, shampoo and body wash
* household essentials
It’s about cutting waste where it actually happens - at the packaging stage.
How refill shopping works (step by step)
This is the bit that often feels intimidating, so here it is in plain English.
1. Bring a container (or don’t)
You can bring jars, bottles, tubs, bags - anything clean and dry.
Forgot? No problem. We have spare containers in store, so you’ll never be turned away.
2. Weigh it first
Before you refill, we weigh your empty container so you’re only charged for the product you put inside, it will print a label.
3. Refill what you need
Fill up as little or as much as you like. No minimums. No pressure. But no mixing.
4. Weigh again and pay for the contents
Reweigh at the scales, deducting your container weight (far less complicated than it sounds) that’s it. Simple, relaxed, and very normal once you’ve done it once.

Do I have to be “zero waste” to shop this way?
Absolutely not.
You don’t need:
* a perfect waste-free lifestyle
* matching jars
* to do everything at once
Most people start with one or two swaps - and that’s more than enough.
Reducing waste isn’t about being perfect. It’s about doing what you can, when you can.
Is refill shopping more expensive?
This is another common worry.
Because you’re:
* not paying for packaging
* buying only what you need
* avoiding impulse purchases
Many customers find refill shopping works out similar or cheaper - especially for staples.
We are very open about our pricing and although lots of our products don't compare to what you will find in the supermarket, we’re always happy to talk about the difference, prices and options honestly.

Why we opened Zilch
Zilch exists because we wanted to create a better planet for our children and future generations. We believe the best way to do that is by making sustainable living feel accessible, welcoming and realistic for everyday life - so that, over time, it simply becomes the norm.
No guilt. No judgement. Just practical swaps that make a difference.
Whether you’re refilling one jar or your whole shop, you’re always welcome.
Thinking of trying it?
If you’re curious, the best next step is simply to pop in and have a look.
Ask questions. Start small. Take it at your own pace.
And if you’re not sure where to begin, we’re always happy to help you find an easy first swap.
💚

I love Zilch!! Emma and the staff are SO helpful, friendly and professional. I'm really pleased your putting Zilch out there! I don't know what I'd do without you and I prefer support a small business over supermarkets whenever possible!- also it's surprising how much cheaper some things are to buy from Zilch, especially things like organic pasta.. I'm also hooked on dates now- yours are delicious, price wise they're a bargain compared to other places. Oh, also I recently tried the organic chocolate star cereal and it's safe to say I'llbe stocking up another tub real soon!
If you haven't been to Zilch, please go even if it's just for a look around.. And if you've been before but…
